Recurrent pneumonia in same location or incidental finding, suspected pulmonary sequestration
Recommended: CTA Chest (systemic arterial supply) is the preferred imaging study for recurrent pneumonia in same location or incidental finding, suspected pulmonary sequestration. Non-functioning lung tissue with systemic (often aortic) arterial supply.
Recommended study
CTA Chest (systemic arterial supply)
Non-functioning lung tissue with systemic (often aortic) arterial supply. Intralobar (most common) vs extralobar (with own pleura).
If the default doesn't apply
Prenatal / pediatric
US
Prenatal US + postnatal CTA Chest
No contrast
Watch-outs
Recurrent infection / hemoptysis
Definitive treatment is surgical resection or embolization of feeding vessel.
Pearls
- Intralobar: usually left lower lobe; arterial supply from descending thoracic aorta.
- Extralobar: own pleura, often diaphragmatic; can be infradiaphragmatic.
- Distinguish from CCAM / CPAM (no systemic vessel).
