Neonatal duodenal obstruction or adult dyspepsia, suspected annular pancreas
Recommended: Upper GI Series + MRCP is the preferred imaging study for neonatal duodenal obstruction or adult dyspepsia, suspected annular pancreas. Ring of pancreatic tissue encircling 2nd portion of duodenum.
Recommended study
Upper GI Series + MRCP
Ring of pancreatic tissue encircling 2nd portion of duodenum. Can cause duodenal narrowing.
If the default doesn't apply
Neonatal presentation
XR
Upper GI series
Oral contrast
Watch-outs
Pancreatitis association
Patients with annular pancreas have higher rates of pancreatitis.
Pearls
- Double-bubble sign on neonatal AXR — duodenal obstruction.
- MRCP shows ring of pancreatic tissue around duodenum.
- Surgical management: duodenoduodenostomy (don't divide the annular tissue).
